(R)evolution of Rock Guitar - Fractal Audio Axe-Fx Ultra Preamp/Effects processor - Part II Played by Ketil Strand. This is a new version of my "Evolution of Rock Guitar" video series, which is also a demo of my new Fractal Audio Systems Axe-Fx Ultra Pre-amp/Effects processor. This time I used the Axe-Fx Ultra exclusively for all guitar sounds and effects and recorded it direct in Cubase, no extra "tricks" done in the mix or anything, it's all coming from the Axe-Fx (except the backing tracks of course..) But I'm using many different guitars as shown and mentioned in the video. I've also mentioned some of the amp types and effects from the Axe-Fx that I'm using on the different tracks, if anybody should need more specific details, please contact me (the Axe-Fx has thousands of parameters to adjust..). Peaches En Regalia (Frank Zappa) -- Axe-Fx II - Played by Ketil Strand I was originally planning to include this early Zappa classic (from the 1969 "Hot Rats" album) as a part of my other video "(R)evolution of Rock Guitar-part 5: Fusion/Jazzrock"; a compilation of short versions of various tracks from various fusion/jazzrock guitarists, but decided to make a separate video with the full version of "Peaches.." instead. I also feel that Frank Zappa is in a category of his own, so it didn't seem fair to put him together with the others either.. ;-) This also put my new Axe-Fx II (and programming skills..) to test, as my goal was to play almost all the orchestral parts with only one guitar and the Axe-Fx II (and of course my Fractal Audio MFC-101 Midi foot controller plus 4 exp pedals). So there are lots of "intelligent harmonizer" and "custom shift/custom scales" stuff going on here, plus "guitar synth" and other effects, all coming from the Axe-Fx II. The backing track has only drums, bass and keyboards on some sections, the rest is just Guitar/Axe-Fx. Follow the on-screen text for details. This is a demo of a Fender Jazzmaster Ultralight which I previously owned. It's a very nice, small and lightweight amp with plenty of volume despite its small size (it's rated at 250W..) I like this amp a lot, but after I got my Axe-Fx Ultra and my Atomic Reactor FR's, I don't need it anymore, so now I'm selling it. It's solid-state, but it has a very "tube-like" sound, plus a few extras that a regular tube amp normally don't have; 16 built-in DSP effects on each channel, balanced speaker-emulated line out, tuner/mute switch, magnetic "docking" between the amp and cabinet (very cool!), and it weighs around half of a regular 1x12 tube combo (just 11kg/24 lbs!) This amp seems to be one of Fender's little "secrets" though, they're hard to find, and I couldn't find any demos of it either, so I decided to make one myself. It actually seems like Fender has discontinued it now, too. But it has been very well received by jazz guitarists and others who have been lucky enough to try or buy it.. Obviously it's targeted specially at jazz guitarists, but it offers a lot more than just nice clean jazz sounds, and I hope this demo will show that. The clean channel sounds equally great for jazz, funk or Dire Straits-type clean sounds, and the lead channel can give you anything from a little crunch, via classic blues/rock sounds, to modern high gain sounds. And the line out actually sounds pretty good, too. For the audio recording for this video I used both the Line Out and a Shure SM57 ...

This is a follow-up to my "(R)evolution of Rock Guitar.." part 1-4 video series, and it doubles as a demo of my new Fractal Audio Systems Axe-Fx II Preamp/FX processor and MFC-101 Midi Foot Controller (in the previous video series I used the Axe-Fx Ultra). The Axe-Fx II is used exclusively for all guitar sounds and effects and recorded direct in Cubase, no extra "tricks" done in the mix or anything, it's all coming from the Axe-Fx (except the backing tracks of course..) This time I wanted to focus on, and give a tribute to, some of the many great fusion/jazzrock guitarists that have inspired and influenced me, "filling the gap" between rock and jazz... I was never quite happy with it before, but I think it came out ok this time.. All guitar and bass parts were played through the Axe-Fx Ultra by Fractal Audio Systems. the guitar is my new Rickenbacker 360, switching between bridge and neck pickups. I'm using the Axe-Fx Ultra's factory preset 066 "Pushed" with a wah effect added, and a Roland EV-5 exp pedal to control the wah. For the bass part I used my Fender Jaguar Baritone Custom, which basically is a guitar tuned an octave down. Drums: Toontrack EZ drummer. Recorded direct from the Axe-Fx Ultra to my computer, using Cubase for recording and mixing. Ketil Strand www.ketilstrand.com
