My step-by-step guide to destroying civilization with nanotechnology. 3D animation created with motion capture technology.
When I tell people I collect snapshots, I usually get a blank stare. So I made this video to help explain why I love them. Music: "Gruyere" by Podington Bear, used under a Creative Commons license "Last Kind Word Blues" by Geechie Wiley, recorded 1930, no known copyright A book of my "talking pictures" is due out from harpercollins at the end of 2011 -- but in the meantime, if you want to see more of them, you can check out the following blogs I wrote: www.mentalfloss.com www.mentalfloss.com www.mentalfloss.com
A short film about my favorite post-apocalyptic hell-hole, the Salton Sea. Music composed by Michael Picton. Download the song on CD Baby: www.cdbaby.com A few people have asked in the comments if I'm a writer. Yes I am! My first novel comes out in a few weeks, and can be pre-ordered here: www.amazon.com My equipment: Canon 5DmkII 24mm lens & 100mm lens Steadicam Merlin Final Cut Studio & Color An awesome composer named Michael Picton, who would probably object to being listed as "equipment" but also will probably not read this. Also, to those considering a visit to the salton sea, be warned that it can get up to 110-120 degrees, you'll be far from a garage should you break down, and it can smell pretty awful. Late fall and early spring are much better times to go!
I'm not sure if I like it when it rains like this, but it sure is pretty. Song snippet by the inimitable mountain goats.
Digging through old tapes, I found this -- footage from a road trip I took with John Green and our friend Kathy way back in 1998, during Spring Break from Kenyon College. We drove from Ohio to the Grand Canyon and back in John's old Volvo, and whenever John would run out of batteries on his camera -- he was constantly filming and narrating -- he would grab mine. His footage is lost to the ages; this is all that's left. But it's pretty damn precious nevetheless. Don't you wish you'd come? For the love of God! LOOK at that! Classic. Oh, and for the record this was shot on Hi-8, not VHS. Which is why it looks slightly-less-than-eye-gougingly-awful, but still not great. FYI, Nerdfighters: - Kathy is not the Yeti. - No one was smoking anything weird. - He's not talking to Hank, or anyone in particular, who didn't come on the trip. - You should watch my other, non-john-green-related videos! I am more than just a john green time machine! *sobs quietly in corner*
Wherein I sing a silly song to support breast cancer research. Please consider donating to a most worthy cause: Susan G. Komen for the Cure at www.komen.org Footage and photos of breast cancer walkers shot by me at the 2007 and 2009 San Diego 3-Day Walk for the Cure. A free MP3 of this song is here (awesome recording studio and wicked solos courtesy my pal Bill Johnson): ransomriggs.squarespace.com Lyrics: My teacher in the second grade was kinda hot Something about her made me want to stare at her a lot She had these two big round things hanging from her chest Even at that tender age I knew I liked breasts You try to hide it, but I know you like them too So please help us save the boobs! I don't claim to be a connoisseur of breasts There's other causes worth fighting for (I guess) But take a moment just to picture if you can: Lindsey Lohan, Heather Graham, Uma thurman, Meg Ryan, Lessica Lange, Amy Tan,or Scarlett Johansson without their cans You try to hide it, but I know you like them too So please help us save the boobs it could happen to your sister or your mom Or the girl you took to prom Your grandma or your uncle Tom ... it's true! Guys can get breast cancer too if you think you don't know anyone with an endangered rack Then I guess you haven't heard this scary fact: One in eight women will develop breast cancer it's pretty obvious we've got to find an answer Even a couple dollars'll do In our fight to save the boobs Please help us save the boobs
