tinyurl.com You may have read that Matt Damon died recently during a hunt for lost Mexican gold in the desert. Well, guess what? He didnt. Matt Damon is still alive. Its shocking, we know. All the parts of the story seemed to add up Matt Damon does look like the sort of person wholl eventually end up dying, and his thirst for perilous Indiana Jones-style archaeological adventures is what people love him best for but it was all a lie. In fact, instead of dying in horrible circumstances, Matt Damon went to Italy. So at least the rumours were close. It used to be that you werent anyone in Hollywood unless you had an impractically large entourage. And then it used to be that you werent anyone in Hollywood unless your face had been injected with whatever poison happens to make you most closely resemble a gender-nonspecific shop mannequin that appears to be constantly appalled by a vaguely noxious smell. And now youre not anyone in Hollywood unless someone has created a spurious internet death hoax about you. And if thats the case, its time to welcome Matt Damon into the big boys club. Thats right following the wildly successful Jeff Goldblum and Britney Spears internet death hoaxes, Matt Damon yesterday became the latest celebrity to shock about six idiots on the internet for less than a minute after it was reported that hed died. It didnt take long for the reports to spread across the internet, though, and thats probably for two reasons. First, the reports had a definite ring ...

tinyurl.com Two-time Emmy-winning talk show host Tyra Banks kicked off the fifth season of her ratings winning daytime gabfest with a big reveal — her natural hair!! Tyra Banks may have gone from model to reality TV mogul, but she isnt quite where she wants to be. I wish I was more of a diva, Tyra told Tuesdays Nightline while talking about cast changes on Americas Next Top Model. I wish [I] was harder, I wish I didnt care so much about being the nice girl all the time. Because a lot of the time people can take kindness for weakness so I wish I had a little bit more oomph in me. In recent years, former ANTM judges Janice Dickinson and Paulina Porizkova havent been shy about criticizing the model competition shows host, but dont ask Tyra why. I dont know, she told the TV news program. Why do you think?

tinyurl.com Milking everything they can out of the 3(!) hours ABC's Chris Cuomo spent interviewing Jon Gosselin, the network followed up the Jon Gosselin on Good Morning America segment with the evening special, Primetime: Family Secrets. Besides a rehash of some material aired on Good Morning America, Jon also said that Kate Major was "no romantic fling" and that she was telling "stories." He also seemed to confirm that he had been living in an apartment above the garage of their compound since last October, and that one day: When it got so bad, I couldn't take it anymore... I'm paying a mortgage on my house, I don't even sleep in it anymore... I was eating dinner, [Kate] comes walking in, and the next thing out of her mouth is, "I don't even know why we got married..." it was like, weird... it was out of the blue... I don't know why. Jon said that the first time he stood up to Kate after Christmas of last year, insisting that he wanted to "go out," felt "really good," and it seemed like that was when Kate really wanted to go forward with ending the relationship. Jon then claimed that he was willing to fix things, but Kate refused any sort of couple's therapy:

tinyurl.com Now that President Obama has given his speech to school children everyone can actually step back and judge whether the address was indoctrination or just another uplifting message. Many conservatives have come to their senses and endorsed the speech. Some others like Rush Limbaugh continue to criticize the President's address despite all evidence to the contrary. While people like Rush Limbaugh certainly are easy to condemn on this story there is another crowd who deserve just as much criticism. These are the commentators who earlier were screaming "indoctrination" and comparing Obama to people like Kim Jong Il. Many of these commentators are now curiously absent from the airwaves. They were willing to make such bold accusations before the speech was even released but now that they have been proven wrong these conservative commentators have gone into hiding. In the clip below Keith Olbermann's staff does a brilliant job of piecing together the conservative criticisms along with the speech itself to demonstrate the absurdity of the controversy. Some of the speech critics would like us to forget their comments but we should always keep clips like this stowed away to discredit these same commentators when their head pop back up to make the next ridiculous claim.

tinyurl.com Afghanistan's Independent Elections Commission (IEC) to conduct the audit and recount because of "clear and convincing evidence of fraud in a number of polling stations." Most of that fraud evidence is an "exceptionally high number" of votes cast in a polling station "in relation to the number of ballots available" or an extremely high number of votes cast for only one candidate, according to the ECC. Therefore, the ECC is ordering an audit and recount of ballots at polling stations where the total number of votes is 600 or more, and represent a voter turnout of 100 percent; and where one candidate received 95 percent or greater of the total valid votes, if the total number of votes exceeds 100. The ECC has received more than 2000 complaints since the election, including more than 700 it has deemed "Priority A." The decision comes after US Ambassador to Afghanistan Karl Eikenberry urged Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai to allow the investigation into vote fraud, senior State Department officials said. The two met Monday night in Kabul, the officials said.

tinyurl.com Get ready to get your Monopoly on, global style: Hasbro is preparing to unveil a live version of its Monopoly game with Google Maps serving as the game board. The game, entitled Monopoly City Streets, is set to launch this Wednesday -- yep, the same day as that other 09/09/09 event. Is it just me, or is the utterance of "Google" and "monopoly" in the same sentence giving anyone else a sense of déjà vu? The Monopoly City Streets Tour Monopoly City Streets - Google Maps Google antitrust jokes notwithstanding, the Monopoly City Streets game is managing to build a steady buzz in the blogosphere this week. The official game Web site calls it the "biggest live game of Monopoly in history" (the title of "best employer of superlatives ever," I assume, was already taken). "A world of property empire building on an unimaginable scale will be launched," the site proclaims. "Own any street in the world. Build humble houses, crazy castles and stupendous skyscrapers to collect rent. Use Monopoly Chance cards to sabotage your mates by building hazards on their streets." With Google Maps as its base, Monopoly City Streets will actually turn the globe into a game board. Contrary to some media reports, however, Google itself didn't have a strong hand in building the game; rather, Hasbro's UK-based digital agency directed the process, using the Google Maps API, street data from OpenStreetMap, and occasional guidance from the Google team. tinyurl.com As soon as Rep. Joe Wilson was identified as the person whose angry and audible outburst disrupted President Barack Obama's health-care speech to Congress, condemnation was swift -- and brutal. Within minutes, someone had altered Wilson's entry on the online encyclopedia Wikipedia: "He is a (expletive) that called the president of the United States a liar on national television and has no respect for the office he holds." When the Web site scrubbed the sentence, an even more offensive entry wormed its way in. Soon, the site disabled edit options for Wilson's entry, chalking it up to "vandalism." On Twitter, post after post urged users to condemn Wilson's breach of protocol, listing his Web site address and his congressional office phone number. Web surfers who visited www.joewilson.house.gov were greeted with the message: "This site is down for maintenance. Please check back soon." Those who called his office number either could not get through because the line was busy, or could not leave a message because the phone continued to ring without activating voice-mail. Don't Miss * Rep. Wilson shouts to Obama during speech: 'You lie' "If he's the face of the GOP, we'll have public option by Columbus Day!" wrote Andisheh Nouraee, a columnist for an alternative weekly in Atlanta, Georgia.

tinyurl.com The first time Stephen Farrell was kidnapped was in Iraq in 2004. It was a thankfully brief affair that ended with typical persistence from the then Times reporter with him negotiating the return of his armoured car and most of his equipment. He went on to write up his encounter as an interview, casting light on Iraqi attitudes towards George Bush. Persistence is a word familiar to Farrell's many friends. When most would be going to bed in whatever country we would find ourselves Farrell would still be on the phone, still writing or planning where he should be, what untold story needed telling. So it is no surprise that after the disastrous air strike on two bogged down tankers in Kunduz in Afghanistan, that Farrell now of the New York Times should want to be there, despite the risk. The tragedy this time is that his release from captivity has come at the cost of his fixer's life and that of one of the British soldiers sent to rescue him from the Taliban. A few years ago, a younger Farrell, with his tongue in his cheek, articulated what drove him. The "God of News" he called it and in a moment of boredom he drew up the Ten Commandments of the God of News. They described a passionate commitment to story-telling, driven by a fierce intellect with an unquenchable thirst to know what made the world work. In recent years, Farrell's work took him from India his first foreign posting to Middle East correspondent for the Times, covering the second intifada, and then ...

tinyurl.com NEW YORK — Brigham Young barged into the Top 10 of the Associated Press poll, making the biggest jump of any team from the preseason rankings after scoring the biggest upset of the opening weekend of the regular season. The Cougars improved 11 spots to No. 9 in the Top 25 released Tuesday, three days after they stunned host Oklahoma 14-13 as 22-point underdogs. Cougars quarterback Max Hall said the victory has energized Provo, Utah, and the BYU campus. "For the first time, there were people at the airport to greet the team. About 2000 people were out there when we got back," Hall said. "The overall atmosphere has been really cool and we're enjoying it." Oklahoma dropped 10 spots to No. 13 after losing. Florida remained an overwhelming No. 1, receiving 56 of 60 first-place votes, two less than last week in the media poll. Texas held steady at No. 2, with two first-place votes. USC will be No. 3 when it visits No. 8 Ohio State on Saturday in one of the biggest nonconference games of the season. The Trojans moved up a spot this week and the Buckeyes fell after escaping with a 31-27 victory against Navy. USC coach Pete Carroll has relished taking the Trojans to venues such as Auburn, BYU, Arkansas and Nebraska, not to mention Notre Dame every other season, and he is fired up about the trip to Ohio Stadium. "It's better for us to play challenging, difficult opponents because to have a great year you have to win 'em all anyway," Carroll said. "So the harder games ...
