US president Barack Obama's hometown of Chicago is to be the venue of the NATO summit about the future of the foreign forces in Afghanistan, which commences on Sunday. With more than 60 heads of state to attend the summit and tens of thousands of protesters also expected to converge on the city, this is the biggest event in the US state of Illinois since the 1968 Democratic National Convention which ended brutally. Security is a primary concern and Obama's former chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel, now the mayor of the city, is tasked with seeing the event through without incident. Afghanistan has been ranked as one of the top five most corrupt nations on earth with officials and foreign contractors benefitting from the siphoning of hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid. For the people, bribery has become a way of life as the average Afghan is said to spend $156 dollars per year on illegal payments. The government of Hamid Karzai, the Afghan president, blames uncontrolled foreign spending on the risings costs associated with daily life in Afghanistan. Last year, however, Karzai fired a prosecutor after a case had charged 17 members of the cabinet of being complicit in graft. Al Jazeera's Bernard Smith reports from Kabul on the calls by the government to have flex more control over spending of hundreds of millions of dollars in foreign aid.

Florida prosecutors have released almost 200 pages of evidence in the case of, Trayvon Martin, the unarmed black teenager killed by neighbourhood watch volunteer, George Zimmerman, last February. The documents and images provide some support for both the shooter- who's claimed self-defence -- and the boy's family which says the killing was racially motivated and avoidable.
